Fall Foliage - Day Trips - Durham Region - Gates Open Savour Durham Weekend

Fall Foliage - Day Trips - Durham Region

Gates Open Savour Durham Weekend

If taking in a Fall Foliage Day Trip To The Huntsville area is out of the question this weekend you may want to take in the Gates Open Savour Durham Weekend right here at home. You will have an enjoyable time exploring Durham's country side and have an opportunity to enjoy some early fall foliage.

This one day event takes place October 3rd. It is a self guided tour of several Durham Region Farms. This region wide farm tour showcases local farms and culinary delights created using locally grown products.

This is the fifth year for this Region Wide Tour that provides an opportunity to tour the farms and learn about agriculture, in addition you can sample farm fresh products and treat created by farm families and chefs from around the region.

While you are welcome to pack your own lunch for a picnic along the way there is no need as local options will be available at some of the farms. In addition there are many fine restaurants throughout the region where you can also stop for a tasty lunch.

Don't forget your cooler to pack away those tasty treats you might purchase. (cash only please)

In addition to the farms on the tour you can add some of the local Durham Region Farm Markets to your trip.

Fall Foilage - Day Trips - Huntsville, Ontario

If You are headed out for a colour excursion this weekend up to Algonquin Park for a Fall Foilage Day Trip take time to explore Huntsville and check out the wall mural displays by the Group of Seven Outdoor Gallery.

Scattered throughout the downtown area and out on the high school you will find an amazing collection of wall murals. Here are a few we photographed earlier this year. In the lower corner is a likeness of Tom Thomson that is located in front of the Civic Centre ..... while not part of the collection it is very striking and certainly adds to the uniqueness of the downtown area.

The Gift Of Life

The Gift Of Life

Thanks to a very generous person one of my clients received a new heart yesterday.

I would like to make a shout out and huge thank you to anyone who has filled out a donor card. In Canada, we sign the card along with our driver's license.

Such a miracle:

Nadine a young mom of 3 kids who has been suffering from a rare heart disease for 4 years has now been given her life back.  Nadine has suffered greatly for 4 years.  Early in July the doctors felt she would not live long enough for a donor, so they installed an artificial heart to keep her alive and now today her new donated heart is beating in her chest.

I find it hard to fathom, and can only imagine the delight of her entire family.  So, thank you to whomever signed the donor card that allowed this miracle to happen and to all those who will sign them to give the ‘gift of life' to others.

Blessings

Uxbridge, Ontario - Celebration Of The Arts 2010 - Nothing To Celebrate

Uxbridge, Ontario - Celebration Of The Arts 2010 -

Uxbridge has an enormous amount of local artistically talented people who use their talent to entertain, amuse and support Uxbridge residents, events, and charities. Several local sculptors have taken a great deal of time to sculpt art works out of some of the trees that had to be cut down around Uxbridge for safety reasons. These sculptures are then placed around Uxbridge for all to enjoy.

Uxbridge Celebration Of the Arts 2008

Pictures of two of the sculptures in progress
during the Celebration Of The Arts in 2008

Nothing To Celebrate

Unfortunately Uxbridge also has a problem with graffiti and a group who seem bent on destroying public and private property. I can just imagine the angst that the sculptors felt when they saw their works despoiled in a wanton display of disregard for the contribution they made to Uxbridge.

Finkleman also wrote the screenplays for a number of Hollywood films in the 1980s, including Grease 2, Airplane II: The Sequel and the Madonna film Who's That Girl. His television productions are seen, in part, as a reaction to his experiences in the mainstream Hollywood studio system." wikipedia

Algonquin Park, Ontario - Fall Foilage Nearing Peak Viewing - Road Trips

Wall Mural reproduction of a group of seven paintingAlgonquin Park Fall Foilage Nearing Peak Viewing

I've been meaning to check Algonquin Parks Peek Colour chart for the last few days and with the start of fall decided now was the time.

According to the information updated daily the peak is in the next 7 to 14 days. There is a growing amount of red, yellow, and orange in the sugar maple canopy and the colours are quickly strengthening. This weekend would be a good time to take a road trip up through Huntsville into the western portion of the park. Good colours should be visible for the first 25K of highway 60 through the park

Tom Thomson - likeness - Huntsville Ontario

During the past 35+ years, the earliest fall colour peak recorded was September 15, 1982, and the latest October 9, 1996. The average peak of the Sugar Maple canopy in the western portion of the Highway 60 Corridor is September 27. Learn more about the history of Algonquin's fall colour peak."

Annual Toronto Waterfront Marathon/Half Marathon/5k race is Sunday, September 26th

Annual Toronto Waterfront Marathon/Half Marathon/5k race is Sunday, September 26th

Yes, it's that time of year again! The annual Toronto Waterfront Marathon/Half Marathon/5k race is happening this Sunday, September 26th, This year 3 of my grandsons will join me in lacing up our sneakers to take part in this fun and worthwhile event. As much as I'll enjoy the walk itself, the real reason why I look forward to it is the opportunity to raise support for an organization that I'm passionate about -- Matthew House

Click here to check out my personal fund-raising page

http://my.e2rm.com/personalPage.aspx?SID=2751500

Every last cent of your donation will go directly to Matthew House

Will you consider sponsoring me to help me reach surpass my fund-raising goal?  We all know that many people are feeling the impact of these uncertain economic times in very real ways.  However, the unfortunate reality is that the needy in our community suffer the most when the going gets rough, and organizations like Matthew House need support now more than ever.  Difficult times provide a great opportunity to encourage others, and to dig deep to show your support for the marginalized in our midst!

Matthew House is a shelter in downtown Toronto that welcomes newly arrived refugees to Canada and provides support and settlement assistance that they need to get on their feet in a new and unfamiliar place.  As a board member of several years I feel it is an honour, to be participating in the run once again, to help raise support this year as we continue offering much needed services to refugees in a challenging economic environment.

Matthew House is no stranger to exciting times and big challenges. As a charitable organization, we rely on the generosity of people like you to propel our mission and purpose (we receive no government funding), we continue to need strong support as we grow.  The Toronto Waterfront Marathon/5k is a great way to offer your support to Matthew House, you get the satisfaction of knowing I'll be waking up super early on September 26th to walk! Please follow the link below to my personal event web page and make a donation online in mere minutes... you'll be amazed at how quick and easy it is!  Every dollar counts! You will receive a tax receipt immediately by email.

Even if you're not able to make a financial donation, please keep Matthew House in your thoughts and prayers as we go about our work in the community, and continue to check our website (matthewhouse.ca) for updates!  You can even book a tour of our main shelter in Toronto, which is a great way to learn more about our organization. If you haven't seen our Dundas St. Shelter since its "Divine Design" TV makeover earlier this year, come check it out!

I truly appreciate you taking the time to make it all the way through this Post, and for thoughtfully considering my request for support.

Thanks so much!

Make it a great day!

Kathy Clulow

Huntsville, Ontario - Who Is The Man In The Picture? The Reveal

Huntsville, Ontario - Who Is The Man In The Picture? The Reveal

In My Post Who Is The Man In The Picture? with this week end being the 25 Annual Uxbridge Studio Tour I thought it might be fitting to see if any one could tell me who this man is and where this likeness can be found.

Ontario has a rich artistic history
of which this man is a part.

You will find his paintings in art galleries museums, and private collections. His work has been displayed in the National Gallery Of Canada. His paintings have fetched over a million dollars at auction.

Tom Thomson
August 5, 1877 - July 8, 1917

He Spent A lot of time in Algonquin Park in central and north central Ontario . He painted for about 1/6 of his life and only 3 Years full time. Most of his work was never signed and he produced less than 50 canvasas

While many believe he was a member of The Group of Seven he was not.

The Group Of Seven Consisted of

Varley, Jackson, Harris,  Johnston, Lismer, MacDonald Carmichael

Who Is That Man

Tom Thomson and Emily Carr were  associated with the Group of Seven, but were never official members

Juli Vosmik Did Her Homework she figured out who he was and where the pictures were taken. While I did not ask she like many thought he was a member of the group of seven. He was part of the group prior to WW1. Thompson died in 1917 and the remaining group started calling themselves the Group of Seven in 1919.

Who Is The Man In The Picture?

Who Is The Man In The Picture?

This week end is the 25 Annual Uxbridge Studio Tour so I thought it might be fitting to see if any one could tell me who this man is and where this likeness can be found.

Ontario has a rich artistic history
of which this man is a part.

You will find his paintings in art galleries museums, and private collections. His work has been displayed in the National Gallery Of Canada. His paintings have fetched over a million dollars at auction.

CAN YOU TELL ME WHO HE IS,
where this likeness can be found?

The Foster Memorial

 Interior of The Foster Memorial

The Foster Memorial itself is worthy of the visit even with out the music. This wonderful unique treasure of byzantine design is located approx 4 km north of Uxbridgeon Durham 1. The solid copper roof has leaded stained glass windows. The doors are constructed of solid brass again with stained glass windows. The floor and ceiling are covered with marble mosaics with inlaid symbols There is a marble alter and the columns supporting the great arches are also marble with devon stone capitals. The structure itself is octagon in shape and built of Indiana limestone with a great central dome.

Foster was born July 24th, 1825, in Lambton Mills but was raised in the former Scott Township (now part of Uxbridge) where the family moved after his mothers passing where his father ran the Hotel in the Hamlet of Leaskdale. Later in life he would become a butcher in cabbage town, (Toronto) and serve as the Mayor of Toronto from 1925 to 1927 in addition to being elected as an MP.

The Thomas Foster Memorial is a striking contrast to the surrounding rolling farm lands. Inspired by the Taj Mahal in India and Christian Byzantine churches it was built as a resting place for Fosters wife and daughter.

For more information about Thomas foster visit Wikipedia,

At the dedication of the Memorial Thomas told the gathering present --

"success is determined, not by financial worth, but rather if the world became a better place because that person passed through it."

Uxbridge, Ontario ... Terry Fox Run

Uxbridge, Ontario ... Terry Fox Run

Almost all of us have been touched by cancer through the suffering and loss of family and friends...... Yet there are relativly few people who try to make a real difference, who are willing to step way outside of their comfort zone and make the decision to dedicate themselves to a greater cause.

Terry Fox was one of those people, he wanted to make a difference. In 1980 Terry started what he called a Marathon of Hope. His marathon, so abruptly intrupted,  has been continued in his name around the world now for 30 years.

Uxbridge was one of the early communities to start a Terry Fox Run, spurred on by Julie Slater. Julie poured her heart and soul into organizing the run evey year until 2007 when she 'officially' handed the reigns over to her replacement.

Remembering The Early Run Years In Uxbridge

The Pit StopHornets.........It is funny what sometimes triggers a memory... hornets, each and every year at the Terry Fox run we had oranges, apples, MacDonald's Pies, Tim Bits....little treats for the participants to nibble on when they make their grand entrance over the finish line. But it is the uninvited guests that I remember...the wasps...hornets...by the hundreds...they came in droves...buzzing around, wanting to crawl over the food....driving us nuts......I can picture Wilda Clark fanning them away year after year.

I remember the early years and the progression as things grew....all the volunteers it takes to arrange for a smooth run. The people on the route....encouraging, handing out water and oranges.....the drivers...checking to make sure there are no problems...or picking up someone who is hurt. The food...calling organizations for donations...then running around, picking everything up, preparing it , taking it to Bedelia....cutting the oranges and apples, bagging them for each rest stop....the treats for afterwards....then clearing it all up and donating any good leftovers to the food bank the following Monday.

Kathy on left Julia Slater Founder of Uxbridge Runon rightTidy up was always the worst part. It may have been only noon...but we had started at sun up and were always exhausted. You see, people run the Terry Fox Run in different ways....some people walk, run or cycle the 10 k's, and some run it in 30 minutes.....others dash in circles organizing, greeting the runners, doing the registration, checking the donation sheets, totalling and balancing the donations, driving, manning the road blocks., manning the start whistle, and the finish line, selling the T shirts, and dozens of other little jobs that make the day run smoothly.

But most of all I Remember the driving force behind us all ..... Julie Slater

Terry Fox The Marathon of Hope

TERRY FOX

He called his journey the Marathon of Hope.

Terry Fox was only 18 years old when he was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) and forced to have his right leg amputated 15 centimetres (six inches) above the knee in 1977. While in hospital, Terry was so overcome by the suffering of other cancer patients that he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.

Terry was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. An active teenager, Terry had been involved in many sports in Port Coquitlam, a community near Vancouver, British Columbia, on Canada's west coast, where he was raised

Starting his run with little fanfare in St. John's, Newfoundland on April 12, 1980 he ran 42 kilometres (26 miles) a day through Canada's Atlantic provinces, Quebec and Ontario.

Although it was difficult to garner attention in the beginning, enthusiasm soon grew, and the money collected along his route began to mount. It was a journey that Canadians have never forgotten.

September 1st, after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres (3,339 miles), Terry was forced to stop running outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario because cancer had appeared in his lungs. The entire nation was stunned and saddened.

Terry passed away on June 28, 1981 at age 22, this heroic Canadian was gone, but his legacy had just begun.
